Not All TPU Is the Same: Why Polyether TPU Outperforms Polyester TPU in Open Water Swim Buoys

When choosing an open water swim buoy, most people focus on features such as size, color, storage capacity, or price. However, one of the most important factors is often overlooked—the material itself.

Many swim buoys are simply labeled "TPU", but there are actually two major types of TPU:

  • Polyester TPU
  • Polyether TPU

Although they look almost identical, their long-term performance in water can be dramatically different.


What Is Polyester TPU?

Polyester TPU is widely used because it offers good mechanical strength and a lower manufacturing cost.

Advantages

  • Lower material cost
  • Good abrasion resistance
  • High tensile strength
  • Easy to process

Limitations

When exposed to moisture over long periods, Polyester TPU is susceptible to hydrolysis—a chemical process in which water gradually breaks down the polymer structure.

As a result, the material may eventually:

  • Become stiff
  • Lose flexibility
  • Develop cracks
  • Shorten the product's service life

For products that are only used occasionally, Polyester TPU can be an economical choice.

However, products that spend significant time in water require a more durable solution.


What Is Polyether TPU?

Polyether TPU was specifically developed for applications exposed to water, humidity, and harsh environmental conditions.

Its greatest advantage is its outstanding hydrolysis resistance.

  • Maintains flexibility over time
  • Superior durability in wet environments
  • Better resistance to UV exposure and weathering
  • Longer service life
  • Ideal for marine and aquatic applications

Because of these properties, Polyether TPU is commonly used in medical equipment, industrial products, marine applications, and other environments where long-term reliability is essential.


Why Does It Matter for Open Water Swimming?

An open water swim buoy is repeatedly exposed to demanding conditions:

  • Salt water
  • Fresh water
  • Swimming pools
  • Sunlight
  • Heat
  • Humidity
  • Repeated inflation and deflation

These conditions accelerate material aging.

If the material has poor hydrolysis resistance, its performance and lifespan can gradually decline.

Choosing the right TPU means choosing greater reliability, durability, and safety over the long term.

At Kapsule Swim, we choose Polyether TPU instead of the lower-cost Polyester TPU.

While Polyether TPU is more expensive, we believe that swimmers deserve equipment that remains dependable season after season—not just for a short period.

Our goal is not simply to manufacture swim buoys.

Not All TPU Is Created Equal

Two swim buoys may both say "Made with TPU."

That does not mean they use the same material.

Understanding the difference between Polyester TPU and Polyether TPU helps explain why some products last significantly longer than others.

When durability, safety, and long-term performance matter, Polyether TPU is the better choice.

Many manufacturers advertise "TPU" as a premium material. While that is technically correct, very few specify whether it is Polyester TPU or Polyether TPU. That distinction can make a significant difference in durability, especially for products that are repeatedly exposed to water.
